Portrait with Folded Hands

About the work

A woman is shown to the waist, her head tilted and her hands folded in front of her. Reddish-brown strokes gather in the hair, the left side of the face and the sleeve folds. The light area across the chest remains largely untouched. Sharp collar and cuff lines establish diagonals that converge on the hands near the bottom.

Sanguine combines soft facial modelling with angular clothing contours. The head shifts the upper composition to the left, balanced by the broad right shoulder. A quiet, pale passage separates the dark hair from the densely worked hands, drawing attention to the slight turn of the head and the closed fingers.
