About the work

A small dark circle anchors the centre of this intricate composition. Faces, rounded forms, loops and numerous small signs surround it. The ochre field is uneven, alternating pale and denser passages; at the lower left, the black drawing gathers into a thick diagonal mass. A ladderlike vertical beneath the centre provides another point of support among the spreading lines.

The work depends on the difference between its overall shape and its details. From a distance, the circular structure dominates; close up, attention shifts to individual figures and recurring marks. The central junction connects these ways of looking. Despite the density, pale intervals keep directions legible and allow connections between elements to be traced.
