A Smile among Slanting Strokes

About the work

A large circle occupies most of the upper composition, enclosing a small smiling face. Black diagonal strokes of different lengths pass through both round forms. Their density varies, leaving a relatively open area around the face. Below, a heavy arc supports a jagged line of peaks; short signs beneath it form a separate, smaller register.

The circle holds the centre while slanting bands carry attention across its boundary. A shared stroke direction is enlivened by changes in thickness, pauses and scattered dots. Only a few marks describe the smile, yet it remains distinct among the broad black traces. The contrast allows the work to read both as a character and as a flat arrangement of circles, bands and white intervals.
