Large Eyes above a Diagonal

About the work

A large rounded head with two spiral eyes occupies the upper half of the sheet. A narrow rectangular body descends to small angular feet. Behind the figure runs an ascending diagonal, accompanied by two uneven bands and a broken trail of dots. Small ears, a short tuft of hair and a tiny mouth accentuate the disproportion between head and body.

The pale interior of the face resembles the surrounding space, yet its closed outline makes it the dominant form. Spirals hold attention at the eyes before the long nose leads downward. Sloping background lines meet an upright pose. This simple opposition produces movement: the figure remains frontal while the field appears to shift diagonally.
