Two Within a Long Outline

About the work

Two heads meet near the top of the sheet: the rounded face on the left turns towards a more angular one on the right. Loops, sharp turns and short clusters of strokes construct eyes, noses and hair. A narrow group of verticals descends below, crossed by long flourishes. A broad arc encloses the heads and body; separate hand contours mark the lower branches.

The closely placed faces contrast with the nearly empty space beside the elongated body. Lines alternately close around recognisable details and extend into independent paths. Sparse dark hatching accents junctions, while smooth outer curves connect distant elements across the open pale ground.
