About the work

A dark head sits close to the centre above broad shoulders and a prominent V-shaped collar. Numerous intersections build the short hair, eyes and cheeks, keeping the face dense even in its lighter passages. Behind it, an arcing outline filled with widely spaced long strokes resembles a high seat back. Its broad pale intervals contrast sharply with the closely worked figure.

Nested shapes hold the composition together: the background arc encloses the head, and the angle of the collar supports the lower face. Repeated vertical movements connect the two zones, while their different frequencies keep them visually separate. The eye returns to the small pale openings beside the nose and mouth. These make the features legible within the dense hatching and preserve the image’s character as a portrait.
