About the work

White circular faces form rows against an almost continuous black field. Small heads above give way to larger ones below, accompanied by increasingly large dark mouth openings. In the last row, these occupy nearly the entire area inside the white outlines. A narrow pale strip at the top carries long rays converging on a black junction near the right edge.

Changes in scale and spacing establish a downward movement with little illusion of depth. The background enters the faces through eyes and mouths, connecting separate figures into one flat structure. Uneven dark coverage reveals the texture of the marks, softening the strict repetition of the arrangement.
