About the work
The black silhouette of a stringed instrument occupies almost the full height of the composition. A narrow neck with tuning pegs rises above a rounded body filled with transverse strokes. Their uneven ends animate the outer edge, while the central vertical remains heavy and stable. A small human figure appears in the pale opening near the base. A slender tree answers it on the right, and extended lines on either side suggest an open landscape.
The difference in scale turns the instrument’s body into something architectural, with a passage and a high arch. The eye first takes in the overall black mass, then discovers the person within it. Rhythmic bands connect these two readings, preserving the instrument’s recognisable shape while giving it the character of an unusual structure.
