About the work

A chain of irregular black shapes descends from the upper left towards a small rectangular face below. In its upper links, pale areas with dots and short strokes also become heads. Curved rows of notches accompany the solid silhouettes. The lower face is assembled separately: two three-dimensional rectangles serve as eyes, a narrow bar as a nose, and a long strip of triangles as a toothed mouth.

The method of depiction changes downward. Above, faces emerge between shapes; below, one is built from separated geometric parts. A fine horizontal divides these registers, while the chain connects them. White space cuts out contours, and repeated notches soften the passage from heavy masses to small detached elements.
