About the work
A few long lines suggest a face, leaving much of the paper untouched. The point of an eye and short dense marks provide visual anchors. Other features are more loosely stated: the contour breaks, bends and leaves parts of the form open.
The portrait draws its expression from the contrast between precise accents and an incomplete whole. White paper participates as actively as the lines, allowing volume to emerge without detailed tonal modelling.
