About the work

A bowed head and compact seated pose meet an elongated torso. Incisions on the head and thighs reinforce the direction of the form. Dark chamotte unites the volumes into a silhouette without concealing differences across their surfaces.

The sculpture invites close viewing. Moving around it changes the relationship between profile, torso and rounded bodily forms; side lighting reveals roughness and fine lines. The title connects the inward pose with the condition of waking.

The small-scale sculpture was made in chamotte in 2018 and is 35 cm high.
