About the work
A pale seated figure is enclosed by dark uprights and crossbars. The body remains discernible, while the face nearly merges with the surrounding marks. Drawing crosses both figure and ground, binding them into a dense structure.
The confined space supports the theme of the title. The small format invites a close look, revealing the pose and isolated areas of light within the black masses. The restrained balance of light and dark gives the portrait its emotional force.
