Red Angel

About the work

A pale round eye is the first point of focus. Around it a face takes shape through an uneven outline, crossing dark lines and passages of red and orange. Cooler blue notes interrupt the warm colour field and add complexity to the surface.

The title identifies an angel, but the treatment departs from an idealised figure. The large format, emphatic drawing and varied paint texture give the face weight and tension. Its force comes from the meeting of an almost symbolic drawing with layered painting.
